Formerly the residence town of the prince-bishops of Münster, today an asparagus metropolis and attractive attraction in the countryside. Sassenberg in the eastern Münsterland has become a popular destination for day trips and holidays and offers very good opportunities to visit the surrounding area as well as the cities of Münster and Osnabrück.
The Feldmark recreation area with the Feldmarksee, a recognised EU bathing water with a lido, is widely known. Sailing, surfing, pedal boating and fishing are also popular leisure activities here. In the district of Füchtorf is the probably unique double castle complex of Harkotten, which dates back to an old castle complex from the beginning of the 14th century and is now a popular destination for excursions.
From a culinary point of view, the district of Sassenberg-Füchtorf is on the hit list of all gourmets, especially in spring. Around 20 asparagus farms give Füchtorf its reputation as an asparagus metropolis. The taste of fresh asparagus is unique and firmly established on the menus of regional cuisine at harvest time. The crowning of the asparagus queen is one of the highlights of the asparagus season in Sassenberg.
