Clear forms, lots of light and an exciting look at art from the 20th century to the present day: the Ahlen Art Museum is a special place for anyone who wants to experience art - in person, up close and alive.
In changing exhibitions, the museum shows works of classical modernism on the one hand and more recent, contemporary art on the other. In the form of paintings, photography, sculptures and other objects. The museum is constantly surprising visitors with themed exhibitions that open up unusual perspectives.

About the history and the offers

The architecture of the building elegantly combines old and new: a modern extension made of steel and glass harmoniously adjoins the historic town villa in which the museum was founded in 1993 by Ahlen entrepreneur Theodor F. Leifeld. The 19th century villa and the extension are complemented by a sculpture garden and light art in the outdoor space as well as the neighbouring restaurant in the restored Ackerbürgerhaus.

Workshops, guided tours and creative hands-on activities bring art to life here. There are also special programmes for children, young people and senior citizens.

Time for a coffee break? The neighbouring Café Chagall invites you to linger after your visit to the museum.

4 tips for the museum

  • A special highlight in the evening is the artwork "Cascade" by Egill Sæbjörnsson. Thanks to video projection, the extension is illuminated with moving strips of light for around three hours.
  • Not far from the museum you will find beautiful buildings such as Holtermann House, St Bartholomew's Church and the Old Town Hall on the market square. Take a look around the town centre!
  • The WerseRadweg runs for 125 kilometres through the southern Münsterland. The Ahlen Art Museum is right on the route.
  • The 49-kilometre cycle tour"Paths full of contrasts" also passes the art museum.
