Park at Hülshoff Castle

The beautiful baroque parks that surround Burg Hülshoff are a popular destination for walkers. The family of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff had the approximately 30-hectare landscape park laid out in the Baroque style in the 18th century: With regularly landscaped garden fields, a summer and a winter bosquet and a flowering garden island in the centre. There is even a historic tea pavilion that small groups can book for an exclusive TEATIME.

stroll in the woods

A stroll through the landscaped park constantly opens up new perspectives on the romantic moated castle. Manicured flowerbeds and spacious lawns alternate stylishly, and summer and winter bosquets as well as the garden island represent three different garden areas.

In the winter grove to the south, Clemens August II once tried to create a home for exotic plants such as pines, cedars, cypresses and arborvitae. Today, yews, buxus, holly and arborvitae as well as impressively large rhododendron bushes provide an evergreen character.

In contrast, lush flowers, roses and perennials transform the northern garden island, which was once a kitchen garden, into a blooming sea of flowers depending on the season, with a bronze bust of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff enthroned in the centre.

The main path finally ends in the summer bosquet, which is particularly charming with its magnificent chestnut avenue through a forest full of mighty beech, oak, ash and maple trees and is an interesting counterpart to the winter bosquet.

Annette's teahouse: A place of tranquillity

The small teahouse in the summer bosquet at the end of the main path was probably a gift from his uncle. Ferdinand von Droste had the garden pavilion built for his niece in 1804. In fact, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff liked to drink her afternoon tea here and gather strength and new inspiration for her literary work. The enjoyable tea parties were held in the English style and can be re-enacted today on request. The castle restaurant serves an exquisite selection of teas, English tea cakes, scones and other delicacies.
