This road bike tour tip from Michael Sandner, Chairman of Radclub Münster e.V., is ideal for anyone who enjoys riding a mountain stage. There are 600 metres of altitude to overcome. This 95-kilometre road bike route in Münsterland is comparatively challenging, but makes up for it with beautiful views and wonderful nature experiences.
The starting and finishing point is the town centre of Telgte. The town on the River Ems is characterised by its beautiful old town with picturesque alleyways and squares. From Telgte, the route continues towards Ostbevern. The famous baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun worked here and left behind an impressive testimony to his architecture in the form of the Loburg moated castle, which has been home to a grammar school and boarding school since 1951. The castle park is a must-see, especially for rhododendron fans in spring.
The tour leads past meadows and fields to the municipality of Lienen, which lies at the transition from the Münsterland to the Teutoburg Forest and is characterised by its beautiful location. If your feet are tired, visit the Lienen barefoot park! Because now it's getting strenuous: the mountain stages begin. From Lienen, the path winds its way up to Holperdorper Tal, one of the most beautiful valleys in the Teutoburg Forest with its pretty half-timbered houses. Along the way, it is worth making a detour to the "Malepartus" inn to fortify yourself with Bavarian delicacies and linger in the beer garden.
However, you need to be a little careful with the route, as it includes a loop to add a few more metres in altitude to the speedometer. After the loop, the route then heads towards Lengerich. An insider tip for Sundays: visit the art café on the estate of Haus Vortlage and linger in the enchanting setting of the manor house. Vortlage House is not directly on the route, but can be reached via a short detour.
The route now takes you leisurely to Ladbergen, past the Buddenkuhle bathing lake, as the mountain stages are now over. The town centre is home to charming half-timbered houses and squares shaded by large trees with inviting beer gardens. The old watermill in the centre of Ladbergen is also a great photo opportunity.
Via Brock and Westbevern-Vadrup, the route leads along idyllic landscapes to Haus Langen. The once fortified ring fortress is one of the oldest earth fortresses where water was used for protection. The beautiful watermill, which is part of the manor, is one of the most striking, typical Münsterland twin buildings of the Middle Ages. Haus Langen itself is privately owned and should be viewed from a distance.
Now it is not far through the Münsterland parkland to the starting point in Telgte.
