Peace Hall in the Historic Town Hall Münster

The Peace Hall in Münster 's Historic Town Hall owes its name to the conclusion of the Spanish-Dutch Peace, which was solemnly invoked here on 15 May 1648. This peace agreement is part of the Peace of Westphalia. For five years, the peace was wrangled over in complicated negotiations. Münster as well as Osnabrück served as central negotiating locations.

In April 2015, the European Commission awarded the town halls of Münster and Osnabrück the European Heritage Label as sites of the Peace of Westphalia.

The Peace Hall today

Today, the Peace Hall has masterpieces of carving and portraits of the sovereigns and envoys who came to Münster for the Peace Treaty. The portrait gallery with the envoys' portraits was purchased by the Council as early as 1649. Wander through the hall and learn more about Münster's history. If required, you can also book a guided tour through the providers Stadt Lupe Münster e.V., StattReisen Münster e.V. and K3 Stadtführungen.

Destruction and reconstruction

Münster's town hall is a Gothic building from the middle of the 14th century. The high gables are particularly impressive. Originally, the hall served as the council chamber, whose magnificent wooden Renaissance panelling dates from around 1577.

During the air raids on Münster in the Second World War , the town hall was hit by several bombs on 28 October 1944 and burnt out completely. However, in the 1950s the characteristic arched building was rebuilt true to the original. The furnishings of the Peace Hall, which were removed during the Second World War, were also rebuilt true to the original.

The Peace Room on the Peace Route

However, the Peace Hall is not the only setting of the Peace of Westphalia. Haus Marck, the town of Lengerich and other places are also part of it. The sites are united on a 163 km cycle route. The so-called Peace Route follows the routes on which the peace riders travelled. Their task was to exchange news and information between the two negotiating sites. You can relive this route on your bike.

Aaseepiraten set sail

For six weeks - the individual courses run for one week each - the young sailors have the Aasee firmly in their hands. Often all our boats are out and about, manned by crews organised according to age and ability. There has never been a shortage of fun when learning to sail. This is certainly one reason why some holiday weeks are always fully booked early. Incidentally, there are only two requirements for these holiday sailing courses: The children must be 6 years old and be able to swim. However, life jackets, which we provide free of charge, must be worn. Because safety comes first with us.

The sailing week always starts on Mondays and ends on Fridays. We sail daily between 10:00 and 16:00. The hungry young captains bring a packed lunch for the lunch break.

The following courses are available:

Junior courses (from 6-9 years)

We divide the junior courses into levels A, B and C. The Junior A course is for the youngest sailing beginners from the age of 6, who are given a very gentle introduction to sailing. In the Junior B course, the skills are repeated and refined. The Junior C course gives girls and boys an introduction to regatta sailing. At the age of 9, the Junior Basic course is the best place to start. You will be sailing in small teams of 3 or 4 on our stable Rügen dinghies.

Junior A: For beginners aged 6-8

Junior B: for children who have already done Junior A

Junior C: for children who have already completed Junior B

Junior basic course: for children aged 9 and over

Basic courses (from 10 years)

We divide the basic courses into levels A, B and C. Basic course A is for all sailing beginners between the ages of 10 and 15. The basic course B is characterised by repetition and refinement of sailing skills, where trapeze sailing is also possible. In basic course C, trapeze sailing is always used, some new sailing manoeuvres are added and the theory is expanded.

Basic course A: for all beginners aged 10 and over who would like to learn to sail

Basic course B: for anyone aged 10 and over with previous sailing experience

Basic course C: for all those who have already completed basic course B

Advanced course (from 12 years)

For all those aged 12 and over with good sailing experience who are sporty and have completed the basic B and C courses. Spinnaker and trapeze sailing round off this expert course.

Planing dinghy course (from 10 years)

For children aged 10 and over who want to sail fast and have sound previous knowledge (e.g. two sailing courses). Sailing is on the RS Feva or RS Venture, for advanced sailors also on the gennaker - wet feet are guaranteed.

The night watchman's tour. The original! Through the old town by lantern light
21.08.2026, 21:30 21.08.2026, 23:00
Square of the Peace of Westphalia, Münster
Organiser: StattReisen Münster e.V.
guided tour

By lantern light, accompany the guardian of the citizens' weal and woe through the dark streets of the old town. Hear about his daily work and the hustle and bustle between the cathedral castle and the city walls: about rich merchants and dirty alleyways, about the bustling market and episcopal power, about Gruet beer and secular jurisdiction - and last but not least about his "colleague", the tower keeper.

And when his horn sounds at the end of the tour, you will not only be privy to the "historical misdemeanours" of the tower keeper, but also a good piece of the long-gone history of the old Hanseatic city of Münster.

Meeting point: Town Hall courtyard, Chillida benches
Duration: 1.5 hours

No pre-booking necessary.

Münster crime city tour:

Ever since Wilsberg, Boerne and Thiel started investigating, there have been murders in Münster - and not too few! The otherwise tranquil cathedral city has established itself nationwide as a crime city - fortunately more on the screen. However, Münster also has its fair share of scandalous murders and many a bizarre crime.

This tour opens up secret files, traces legendary cases and takes you to the original film locations. On the one hand, we show how Münster developed into a popular TV city - murderously good and criminally exciting! But we also show the historical significance of these locations and how they are currently used.

4 Tips for the Peace Room

  • There is no parking space directly at the town hall. It is best to use the surrounding parking facilities in the city centre, for example on Domplatz or in the Aagidii multi-storey car park.
  • As a reminder of the Peace of Westphalia, the café in Town Hall I bears the year as its name. It is only a few minutes' walk from the Peace Hall. At "1648" you can have lunch or just a coffee break. Enjoy the magnificent 360° panoramic view of the city.
  • Fancy some more museums? The LWL Museum of Art and Culture and the Pablo Picasso Art Museum are only a stone's throw away from the Friedenssaal.
  • You can combine your visit to the Friedenssaal with a walk in the city centre. There are many great buildings to admire here, such as Münster Cathedral or the Erbdrostenhof.
