Westphalian Horse Museum

The Horse Museum at the Allwetterzoo Münster

A museum of a special kind. If you love horses or want to learn more about them, a visit to the Westphalian Horse Museum is an absolute must. With its unusual concept and location in the middle of Münster's Allwetterzoo , it offers a wealth of information and attractions about horses. On 1,000 square metres of exhibition space, the museum is dedicated to the natural and cultural history of the horse in Westphalia in an informative and entertaining way.

Numerous hands-on and media stations and exciting original objects provide insights into the centuries-long relationship between horse and man. Visitors meet the imposing "Polydor", one of the most successful breeding stallions of all time, learn exciting details about the life of a pit horse and experience the world from the point of view of the noble animals. The riding simulators are particularly popular with children, where they can try out the three gaits of walk, trot and gallop. The interactive carriage simulator is also a real crowd-puller: high on the carriage stand of a historic "wagonette", visitors can choose between a leisurely carriage ride across meadows and bridges or a sporty ride through an obstacle course.

Exhibitions and horses up close

Exhibitions in the Horse Museum

In addition to the exciting permanent exhibition, the Westphalian Horse Museum regularly presents special exhibitions on various topics. The focus is - of course - the horse, but there are also exhibitions on other animals. Particularly popular is the renowned photo exhibition "Wildlife Photographer of the Year", which the Horse Museum has been showing every winter since 2012.

Horses up close

Right next to the museum building is the "Hippomaxx" arena. Here you can experience horses up close and in action: Shows and demonstrations on various horse breeds and riding styles take place regularly in the riding arena. For the youngest horse fans, there is the "Get up close to the horse!" campaign, where children can gain their first experience with a horse.
There are even more "real" horses in the adjacent children's and horse park. Various breeds of horses live in the spacious horse enclosure, just waiting to be stroked by visitors young and old.

Exhibition

Dive into the small and big secrets around the all-rounder forest. We all associate something with the term forest. But is it actually forest or woodland what grows on Germany's soils? What is the difference between the two terms? And what do other forests of this earth look like? Since the first coal forests were formed, trees, plants and trees, plants and animal inhabitants have changed enormously. 10,000 years ago years ago, the influence of humans was added. There is more about this in the exhibition.

Stargazer lecture: Holidays under the starry sky Astro holiday trips to dark observing sites

Lecture

Is the starry sky clearer and more magnificent at your holiday destination than at home in Münsterland... or do you just allow yourself more leisure to look at it on holiday? Both are true. However, due to increasing light pollution, observation sites with high sky quality have become rare. The IDA (International Dark Sky Association) and national astronomy associations recognised this years ago and have now certified stray light protected star parks worldwide. Star enthusiast Martin Vogel reports on his travels there and to other holiday destinations of interest for astronomical observations. He reports which expectations can be fulfilled there for the visual observer and for the astrophotographer, how to plan an astral trip, which of one's own observing instruments are suitable to take along on air travels, which instruments can be rented locally. But often a rotating star chart and a good pair of binoculars are enough to gain unforgettable insights into the world of star clusters, nebulae and galaxies under ideal observation conditions.

Sky observation with the Sternfreunde Münster.

The observation evening begins with a telescopic view of the large planets Jupiter and Saturn. The moon, which has been waxing for seven days, provides views of the "Alpental" and "Hyginusrille" areas. In addition, some particularly impressive craters can be observed along its terminator line. Later in the evening, the first winter constellations will appear.

Admission is free. The telescopes will be provided by the association members on a voluntary basis.

Important: The event can only take place under clear skies. Please inform yourself on our website sternfreunde-muenster.de before your visit.

The current regulations of the Corona Protection Ordinance must be observed-.
