The Münster Symphony Orchestra travels through the musical landscapes of the Münsterland region
The Münster Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 100th birthday in 2019. Several world premieres could be heard on the evening during the Münsterland Festival part 10, including the "Symphony of the Münsterland" by Dr. Volker Leiss from Steinfurt, a sonorous declaration of love to our region. A musical journey to castles and palaces, weaving halls and park landscapes awaited the audience, and a Pättkestour led to the celebration of the Peace of Westphalia.
Another world premiere was the "Music for Violin and Orchestra" by Münster composer Thorsten Schmid-Kapfenburg with Maia Shamugia as the soloist. There were also pieces by Louis Thomas Hardin, alias Moondog, who died in Münster in 1999, a highly idiosyncratic but therefore all the more interesting figure in Münster's musical life. Blind in his youth, he was a New York celebrity as the "Viking of 6th Avenue", a homeless man with long hair, beard, cape, sandals and horned helmet, his spear in his hand.
With this selection, the evening provided an insight into the diversity and quality of contemporary compositions from the Münsterland region.

CULTURAL CENTER GBS (BALE WAREHOUSE) IN GREVEN
The almost 100-year-old walls of the Greven cotton mill (GBS) represent a piece of Greven's history. The factory complex on the original course of the River Ems is a reminder of the heyday of the textile industry, which shaped Greven well into the 20th century. The Greven cotton mill was shut down in 1993. The surviving ensemble of buildings, consisting of the administration building, culture forge, bale store, boiler house and carding mill, was gradually put back into operation as the GBS cultural center from 1998. The music school, the adult education center, a youth café and youth work have found space here.
The bale store of the GBS cultural center is suitable for people in wheelchairs.
