One-woman band with Finnish string instrument

An expressive voice, the kantele as a Finnish plucked string instrument and imaginative percussion: the one-woman band Maija Kauhanen interweaves polyrhythms with handmade beats to create touching soundscapes and compelling grooves. For her performance at the FARB Forum Altes Rathaus Borken, the light-footed virtuoso has brought along the kantele, a rare playing technique she specializes in.
Sometimes she plays with her fingers, sometimes with tiny wooden sticks, sometimes with a cello bow. Her percussion set is also unusual - it ranges from drums to pots and muffin tins. With her singing, the award-winning musician imitates the sounds of instruments and draws inspiration from the rural music traditions of Finland and Karelia as well as the Swedish Kulning singing tradition.

In cooperation with the Department of Culture and Further Education of the City of Borken.

In summer 2020, after several years of renovation, the FARB on the market square in Borken was opened as a cultural venue and town museum. The building ensemble consists of the medieval Heilig-Geist-Kirche church and the old town hall and has been extensively renovated. A permanent multimedia exhibition on the history of the town, modern exhibition rooms, a project room, the printing workshop and a varied cultural program invite visitors to discover and enjoy cultural encounters.
