On the trail of the British station in Münsterland during the Cold War

An abandoned military site in the forest, now overgrown and forgotten. A barracks on the outskirts where families live today. There are numerous places in Münsterland that bear traces of the Cold War.

As a former British garrison church, the Münster Peace Chapel is another such place and bears particular witness to the British station. It was the focus of the themed afternoon "The British in Münsterland" during the Münsterland Festival part 10 in 2019. An exhibition in the church presented photos, archive material, a drone film and a sound app. There was also a guided tour of the historic Friedenspark, where the chapel is located. A bus tour took visitors to places in the surrounding area. Throughout the day, there was the opportunity to talk to academics from Münster University of Münster and contemporary witnesses. The theme day was part of the project "Stranger Neighbor - Life during the Cold War in Münsterland".

In cooperation with the Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft Münster/Münsterland, the Friedenskapelle and the Arbeitsstelle Forschungstransfer, WWU Münster.

Today's concert hall was built in 1953 as the "All Saints Chapel" for the British military stationed in Loddenheide at the time. In 1999, after the British left, the dilapidated building was purchased by Münster entrepreneur Egbert Snoek and lovingly and lavishly restored. Since 2003, the Friedenskapelle am Friedenspark has been used as a concert and event hall, enriching Münster's cultural life. With its excellent acoustics, the Friedenskapelle concert hall is a charming jewel box with a sophisticated concert program.

The Friedenskapelle is suitable for people in wheelchairs.
